Midokura joins OIL and opens MidoNet SDN

Midokura, a network virtualisation specialist, has today joined the Ubuntu Cloud Partner Programme. As part of this programme, Midokura’s MidoNet technology, a software-defined virtual network solution designed for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds, will be part of Ubuntu’s OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL). MidoNet will benefit from interoperability testing with products from twenty five other vendors improving the experience for OpenStack end users everywhere. Midokura will also Charm MidoNet, simplifying its deployment on Ubuntu OpenStack, bare metal and most public cloud environments through Juju, Canonical’s orchestration tool.

Midokura also today announced that the MidoNet source code is now freely available, so anyone – especially those in the OpenStack community – can use, distribute and build on the technology, as well as submit back to the project. Canonical is a leading member of the MidoNet community supporting the open source project.

For any vendor to open source their technology is hugely significant and it is confirmation that the the emerging world of scale out and cloud computing favours open source. It is also confirmation that the extremely strategic areas of Software Defined Networking favours Ubuntu. Seven SDN vendors are now participating in OIL so we see a centre of SDN gravity forming around Ubuntu.

Midokura has been one of the early supporters of OpenStack and long been supported on Ubuntu at customers such as Bit-Isle in Japan. We are committed to building an ecosystem around scale out computing, OpenStack and Ubuntu and so an open source Midonet in OIL helps us take a big step in that direction.

Building new revenue streams: 3 strategic cloud opportunities for telcos in 2026

Cloud and server Telecommunications

PWC claimed the ‘fundamental challenge’ behind slowing growth is that telecom’s ‘core products and services’ are ‘becoming commodities.’ The way forward lies in modernizing and diversifying: evolving from traditional telecommunications to ‘techco’ (technology company) services. In 2026, many of these opportunities will come from cloud com ...
